Doug Exum began his study of Shito-ryu karate in 1985 under instruction of Jerry Ferguson sensei and Julius Thiry shihan of Washington Karate Association.  Exum sensei began teaching the Hayashi-ha curriculum in 1990 and went on to earn the rank of Nidan before his departure to assist in founding Pacific Karate Organization with Ferguson sensei.
In 1996 he became affiliated with Shito-ryu International Karate-do kai and Kenzo Mabuni Soke from whom he gained valuable knowledge and training in the many kata, bunkai and techniques specific to Seito Shito-ryu.  This unique experience of knowing Soke personally has been a primary influence on his karate.  Soke’s insightful instruction, natural style of movement and the genuine love of karate he expressed will forever be remembered.
Since Mabuni Soke’s death in June 2005 Exum sensei remains a dedicated student and teacher of Shito-ryu currently ranked Roku-dan (6th degree) blackbelt.  In addition he has received Shihan and Kyoshi titles awarded by Mabuni Soke distinguishing him as a master teaching instructor of Shito-ryu.
Exum sensei has participated in sport karate as competitor, coach, official and tournament organizer.  He is founder and chief instructor of Northwest Karate-do in Arlington, Washington and his students have numerous National and International sport karate awards to their credit.  He has played a key role in directing numerous events including 1999 Seito Shito-ryu Taikai, NW Junior Classic and Mabuni Cup tournaments.  As an official, he is a recognized National Referee under authority of USA-National Karate Federation and is a Continental Referee with the Pan-American Karate Federation.
